What are Digital Realities? – New Pluralsight Course

Just yesterday I did another interview about HoloLens, what it is and how it fits into the world of virtual and augmented reality. It is a question I get a lot at conferences, user groups, client meetings and of course on social media. Had you asked me two years ago it was a reasonably straight forward answer, with three distinct categories of digital realities.

However, as the technologies evolve, and especially with the introduction of Apple’s AR Kit and Google’s AR Core, the lines are blurring. The once firm definitions are becoming more gray so much so that fellow HoloDeveloper Rene Schulte the other day did a 12min video to explain where mixed reality belong. It will likely end up being all the same definition, whether it is virtual, augmented, mixed or something else entirely. It is both exciting and frustrating at the same time.

Back in June 2017 I was presenting at NDC Oslo and while there I recorded a number of play by play courses for Pluralsight. One of those was with my good mate Stephen Haunts (who has glorious hair) on exactly this topic: digital realities. If you don’t know what a play by play is, go read Steve’s post about it in detail.

The course is now live and is a great insight into how you can get started building apps for mixed reality and HoloLens. Go watch the trailer now!

Pluralsight Course – Emerging Threats in IoT

The fact is that more and more things are being connected to the Internet. We have the obvious things like TVs, game consoles, cars and smartphones. But have you considered your hair brush, your dog feeder or even your special items for the bedroom? Yes, we are making everything connected and with this comes a lot of questions about privacy, safety and not least security. How do you update your light bulbs, and do you know if your dishwasher is also a web server? These are real questions in the world that we are creating.

In this fourth play by play course with my good mate Troy Hunt, we dive into what devices are making this world so difficult and what the real problems are with these. We look at precedents for where it all went wrong and what happened. We discuss the worst examples that Troy has come across in recent years and how the incidents impacted the industry.

Of course, we also discuss solutions to securing your IoT devices, both as a consumer and as a developer. Developers need to take ownership of all the vulnerabilities that are constantly exposed, fix them, and then document the solutions for the entire industry to learn from.

Join us for this very relevant, entertaining and very educational course on Pluralsight. See you there.

Pluralsight Live – The Next Step

In 5 weeks a brand new type of technology and learning event called Pluralsight live takes place for the first time. It is a mix of learning, networking, and emerging trends, but in a way that connects learners, authors, managers and content owners. Here is my journey to Pluralsight Live.

The Beginning

Three and a bit years ago I attended my first Pluralsight Author summit in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was my first year as Pluralsight author with only two courses under my belt, and I was extremely excited to go and meet all the other authors. At the time there was about 400 authors, with maybe 15 in Australia. I wanted to go for a couple of reasons.

Europe Trip 2017 – All the Things!

I am writing this as I sit in a comfortable Danish train on first class enjoying the space and enjoying the expectation of what lies ahead. As I zoom towards Hamburg to pick up the family and spend three weeks in Europe visiting friends, family and discovering new places, I think back of the last three and a bit mad weeks. The biggest trip I have ever done in terms of conferences, user groups, presentations, workshop and so much more.

Having been travelling for conferences and other work commitments extensively for the past 4 years, I have now come to a point, where any travel needs not only expose my brand and my content to a new and larger audience, but I also need to be able to fill out any spare time with other work and exposure. Being a freelancer and independent software developer, my time is always in demand, either for paying bills, building brand or, of course, spending with my family. Every decision to spend time away from home needs to be an absolute win.

Holographic Programming: a HoloLens How-to in a Mixed Reality World

Most people are aware of virtual reality (VR) and to a lesser extent augmented reality (AR). I the last couple of years a new digital reality, mixed reality (MR), has emerged with Microsoft and their HoloLens as the front runner. I have been absolutely blown away by the capabilities and promise of the technology, hence the activity in the form of blog posts, conference talks, workshops and Pluralsight courses. This article explains the various digital realities and was first published by Pluralsight.

In the last couple of years, digital realities have become a more and more stable part of the software landscape. While these technologies aren’t as mainstream as apps for your iPhone or a website for your favorite pizza place, they certainly are pushing their way forward and popping up their digitally distorted face in all kinds of places. Companies like Oculus, Facebook, Google and Microsoft are all heavily involved in developing digital realities for the future of computing. We are talking billions of dollars invested in these projects, which mean as developers and consumers, we should take these products and technologies seriously. They aren’t going anywhere.

However, they aren’t all created equal. In particular, there are three main areas of digital reality.

New Pluralsight Course: Crafting a Brand for Growth and Prosperity

I am a geek. I like writing code, I like new toys, I like fast cars, and I like knowing how they work. I take iPhones apart to fix them and to see how they are put together. I am a geek. However, I am also a freelancer and sole proprietor of my little company that does everything from writing articles, to author Pluralsight courses to provide software development consultancy services. How do I find clients, and how do they find me? In part in comes down to my personal brand; the “Lars Klint factor” some might say.

[pullquote]Personal branding is the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands.[/pullquote]

And that is exactly what I do. I market myself in order to open doors and opportunities. Being independent means that I am responsible for both winning the work in the first place, and then delivering it too. Having a strong personal brand means that I don’t have to be constantly fight to persuade people I can do a particular piece of work. It gives me a leg up in a very competitive market.

Using the HoloToolkit for HoloLens

This article was first posted on gooroo.io

Developing applications and experiences for HoloLens is not hard to get started with, but after you have started a number of projects and worked through the same setup and plumbing a few times, you wish there was an easier way to do it. Well, there is! Created by the team that produced Fragments and Young Conker, the HoloToolkit is a collection of scripts and components intended to accelerate the development of holographic applications targeting Windows Holographic.

The toolkit is all free and comes in two varieties: one for Visual Studio and one for Unity 3D. Developing for HoloLens means spending a LOT of time in the Unity editor, and the HoloToolkit is a simple .unitypackage file you can download and import into your Unity project.

Pluralsight Course – Enterprise Data Encryption with Azure Revealed

A couple of months ago I was in London for NDC, and besides doing two workshops (one privately and one at NDC), two talks at NDC, hosting the evening event on the Thursday night, presenting at PubConf on the Friday night, I also managed to record three courses for Pluralsight in their “Play by Play” format. Before I get to the actual courses, let me explain the concept.

How The Sausage is Made

As with any other course being published in Pluralsight, there is a relatively extensive and thorough proposal process preceding the recording. For each play by play a full proposal that outlines the concept, modules, demos and overall approach needs to be completed and approved by the Pluralsight content managers. The content manager is the person that understands the material in the current catalog on the website and knows if this particular proposal will be a good fit.

Learning HoloLens Development

For the past year I have been doing a lot of talks, workshops and writing around the HoloLens device. I have travelled to Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Poland and lately England, as well locally around Australia to share my passion for the device and the development for it. Although the tooling continue to improve and change, the main paradigm and approach hasn’t changed. Mixed reality is still the same, but the interest for it (and other digital realities) is growing rapidly. Because I can’t be everywhere and only can attend so many conferences and events, I decided to turn some of my conference material into a Pluralsight course for all to consume. Continue Reading

Combatting Workplace Grumpiness – New Pluralsight Course

Throughout the last 20 years I have worked in any kind of job and workplace you can imagine. I have worked on products, worked as a consultant, worked on four different continents, had a desk, had no desk, been in an office, been in open space, in short; all kinds of workplace situations. I have worked with some of the smartest people I will ever meet, learned from amazing talent and great leaders. Yet, somehow every single place has had disgruntled employees, grumpy bosses and annoying rules and regulations. I have never found a place to work that had all the great things I have experienced, and none of the bad.

What is it about workplaces that make people so grumpy, and why are there so many of them (both people and workplaces)? Often you do run into idiots, but more often than not it is the little things that make a huge difference, for better or worse. Simple things like moving the coffee machine, a random act of kindness or leaving a handwritten note of thank you can make a huge difference to someones day. To explore more of how we can be much happier at work, I got an amazing opportunity to sit down with my good friend and overall amazing person Kylie Hunt, who herself is a Chief Happiness Officer. Isn’t that the coolest title ever? We talked about all things workplace happiness, grumpiness and how to have a much better experience at work, which was recorded by Pluralsight and turned into a Play By Play that you can watch today. So go on. Get happier.
