0 comments My Unifi network is at a point where it is maturing rather than expanding. Don’t get me wrong, I am still adding devices where I can and where needed, but I am starting to upgrade as well. One thing that has been on the list for a while is to get a gen 2 switch for the office both so I can use the fun AR feature, but also to get rid of the noise of the gen 1 switch which has its fans on constantly.

0 comments Have you ever wondered just how a USB security works? Yeah, I did too for the longest time. I just couldn’t get my head around why it was more secure, more convenient, or just better than other multifactor authentication options. So, Yubico sent me two YubiKeys to test out, and I made a video out of it, which is below.
TL;DR: USB security keys are harder to compromise than authenticator tokens (in an app), and easier to use as you just touch them when inserted. Anyway, find out more in the video đ

I decided to install a NAS on my local network, having never done it before. Come along as I fumble my way through the whole thing. I have no idea what I am doing. Once set up, I move my Plex server to the NAS for added pixel pushing to my TV.

In December 2018 I received a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme, and since then I have used it as my daily machine both in my office, on the road and for everything else. This post expresses some of my thoughts, good and bad, about the device collected through 12 months.
I’ll start with what comes out of the box. The actual machine and its physical form. If you are familiar with ThinkPad, the X1 Extreme is both an old friend, and a new slightly different cousin. If you want all of the tech spec, which I won’t go through, check them out on the official Lenovo page.
The device is unmistakable ThinkPad with the sturdy and time proven keyboard, the red trackpoint adorning the center of the keyboard and the matte black finish. Personally I have never got used to the trackpoint. I am a touchpad kinda person. But for many many ThinkPad users that trackpoint is the most efficient way to control their pointer.
3 comments As most of you know, I talk a bit about about Lenovo hardware, for better or for worse. I don’t work for them, and I don’t get paid for anything I do with them. I do spend my own cash on hardware occasionally and sometimes they shout me hardware of some kind. It is a great relationship, but these words, and any other you might read from me, are my own. I am not bound by contracts, promises etc. So with that out of the way, let’s turn our attention to the task at hand (cause it does actually fit in one hand): The Lenovo Yoga Book.
0 comments A few months back I bought my Lenovo Yoga 900, after a long time of reading reviews, talking to people, evaluating ultra books and trying to make as informed a decision as possible. I was so wrapped with my choice that I kept telling people how good it is and a few people agreed (and consequently acquired one of their own). I still use the Yoga every single day and it is my number one machine for heavy duty work such as Visual Studio, Unity 3D, SQL Server and other development tooling I use regularly.
However, when Lenovo offered the ThinkPad X1 Tablet to me, I immediately saw a use outside that of the Yoga 900. In fact I was still using my original Microsoft Surface Pro, which had been my trusty second device for about 4 years, and the thought was the ThinkPad Tablet would replace that device very nicely.
Having used the tablet every day for the past three weeks, here are my thoughts (good and bad) on it.

I immediately transferred most of the content of my everyday bag into the 7ven messenger bag, and I have used it since. What are the good and bad features you might ask? Well, let me tell you….
8 comments I am not a hardware guy. I appreciated a great graphics card when I played games on a regular basis, but with an Xbox One and PlayStation 3, this need quickly went away. As long as the machine will do the job and let me use Visual Studio, Chrome, Camtasia, Snagit, video editing software and other developer tools I am happy. I was using my âDellasaurusâ, a 6 year old Dell XPS 1645, which was top of the line when it came out. I even bought it secondhand of a good friend when he upgraded and I still used it for about 2.5 years. However, in the last couple of years I have been travelling a lot, presenting at various conferences and combined with being a freelance consultant I carry my laptop around everywhere. And the Dell was heavy! It was also starting to slow down considerably and I was constantly running out of storage. It was time to upgrade my mobile office.
0 comments We have a lot of cars. Some people collect stamps, we collect cars. So I was on the lookout for an in-car phone holder that was easily removable, sturdy and durable that we we coluld take in whatever car we happen to drive. I ended up with the Olixar Drivetime Pack, mainly due to the chunky look of the hardware and the reasonable price.
The parts were packed securely and each item was attractively packaged (no cutting your fingers open). Unpacking was straight forward. Although there were no instructions supplied, they werenât needed as the items were easy to assemble.
0 comments About 9 weeks ago I was asked if I wanted to participate in the Microsoft #Challenge930. This meant that Microsoft would send a free Lumia 930 as a loan device and I could use it throughout the challenge. Who would say no to that!!?
Being an app developer and trainer for the platform I was also extremely interested in seeing how the device would perform for building apps, experimenting with new features such as the SensorCore and of course using the latest and greatest of the Windows Phone operating system. With the introduction of universal windows apps the features of âBig Windowsâ are now available on your handheld device (although whether the Lumia 1320 and 1520 are handheld is another question entirely).
